What to see in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is a charming city that offers a vibrant mixture of history, tradition, arts and culture. It was declared the European green capital of 2016 and there are no cars allowed in the heart of the center. Best way to move around is by foot or by bike which you can rent with Nomago bikes. You just have to register where they initially charge you 5 EUR and the amount is added to your user's account balance. If you get tired or need to reach places that are further away you can use the local buses by purchasing an Urbana card. The card costs 2 EUR and a single ride costs 1,30 EUR. Taxies are the most expansive option. You can always ask the receptionist to call one for you as it's cheaper to order it through the phone than to grab one from the street.

One day in Ljubljana is just enough to explore the city's main sights if you are in a rush but we would recommend at least 2 nights to experience its vibe. We've prepared a one day itinerary for you to see the best of Ljubljana. If you stay for more than 1 day, we would recommend a half day or a day trip to Kamnik for a beer tour every Thursday with BeerWay Slovenia. It's reachable by train or bus, we suggest to leave the car in Ljubljana in case you really like the taste. ;) If you are not here on those days you can do a trip to Bled and do the longest Zipline (Zipline Dolinka) in Europe. Embrace the monkey in you! :D

At hostel Tresor we offer an optional breakfast with croissants, toasts or granola which you can order just minutes before having it (costs 2,50-5,50 EUR). If you are in a mood for a warm breakfast you can visit an Italian styled Rex bistro on the way to Tivoli park. You can walk around the park or just relax under the trees and watch street musicians do their magic. Coming back to the heart of the center you can reach the most iconic place just 1 min from the hostel - Prešeren square, the Franciscan church of the Annunciation and the Triple bridge. In front of the church there are daily free walking tours run by Free Tours Ljubljana that will take you to Ljubljana's must see's, tell you the best Slovenian history stories and even give you a taste of Slovenian food. If you look up from the Triple bridge you see a beautiful view of the Ljubljana castle, which you can reach by foot or with a funicular. On the way to the castle you will see the Town hall & Robba fountain and the very colorful Art Nouveau buildings. Just few steps away there is a St. Nicholas Cathedral of Ljubljana and Plečnik's market where you can buy fresh local products from Monday till Saturday until 1pm. Every Friday from March till November there is a very popular event called Open kitchen where restaurants from all over Ljubljana come to the market and sell their food and drinks. You might get a bit smaller portion than in the restaurant for the same price but the atmosphere is outstanding. At the end of the market you can see the Dragon bridge. As it's a symbol of Ljubljana you will not be able to escape the image of it while you are here. If you are into antiques there is a Flee market going on every Sunday. It is not the biggest market you will ever see but it has its charm as it reveals a bit of Slovenian past. Don't worry if you are not here on those days. The most authentic experience you can have is just to walk along the river Ljubljanica, have a coffee in one of the places next to it and chill, such a local thing to do. If you would like to see Ljubljana from a different point of view, you can do an activity on the water or go on a boat ride with Ladjica Emonca. Whatever floats your boat. :) If you prefer to spend time in nature which could be limited in the city center, you can do the first real life forest escape in the world with Gozdne, just few kilometers away from the hostel! In case of rainy days there are plenty of options for the ones seeking more knowledge and culture but Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana would be our favorite. Here lies the best description of our history and evolution throughout the centuries. We would definitely recommend seeing Metelkova city that never sleeps. It's an alternative scene of 7 bars / clubs wrapped in a chill backpacker vibe that you will get to love in a second. It is covered in graffiti so we also recommend seeing it in broad daylight as the vibe of the place is completely different. If you're a party animal and you want to visit as many bars and clubs possible, you can start with the happy hour at our hostel (6-8pm, different specials every day) and continue with the Pub crawl until early morning.

Ljubljana is full of life and has a lot of activities but this would be our top 15. If you do any of them or a new activity that you would like us to know about, please leave a feedback, comment, tag or just a thumbs up when you pass the reception. :)
